Abstract

1,031,400. Change-speed control. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. April 30, 1965, No. 18219/65. Heading F2D. A gear-change mechanism comprises a rotating and reciprocating shift-rod on which a series of shift-forks are slidably mounted, the rod being rotated to select a gear ratio and reciprocated to establish the ratio. In the arrangement shown the shift rod carries three aligned radial pins 31, 33, 35 and three U-shaped shift forks 15, 16, 17 arranged in tandem, the forks having shaped cut-outs with recesses 37, 39, 41 engageable by the pins upon rotation of the shaft. As shown, pin 31 engages recess 37 of fork 15 for selecting third or fourth gear, and upon rotating the shaft in one direction pin 33 engages recess 39 of fork 16 for first or second gear, while rotation in the opposite direction causes pin 35 to engage recess 41 of fork 17 for reverse. An interlock mechanism consists of a pivoted single arm member 45 carrying a double arm member 49, the ends of the respective members having rounded projections 47, 51 engageable with recesses 43 in the sides of the shift-forks. The arrangement is such that when a fork is moved to engage a gear the associated projection is disengaged from the recess 43 in the fork while the other two projections are held in the recesses in the two inoperative forks to prevent their movement. A ball detent is provided to lock the shift rod in its adjusted axial position. In a second arrangement, Figs. 5-10 (not shown), the shift forks are nested within one another and are operated by a single radial pin on the shift rod.
