Abstract
416,424. Controlling variable-speed gearing ; linkwork. PULS, E. F., 48, Middleton Hall Road, King's Norton, Birmingham. March 11, 1933, No. 7380. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii).] A control mechanism, particularly for preselective epicyclic variable-speed gearing, comprises a control-lever 9 and a controlled follower 5, with interengaging flat surfaces 8, normally held in contact by balanced tension-springs 10, 11, so that when the control-lever 9 is moved to the inclined position shown in Fig. 3, the springs apply a torque to the follower 5, which causes it to follow the lever 9 when free to do so. The follow-up torque is substantially constant for all positions of the lever. Fig. 4 shows the mechanism applied to the epicyclic gear described in Specification 227,460, [Class 80 (ii)]. The control-lever 19 is connected, through a rod 20, to the preselector, and the controlled follower 14 is formed with detent notches 29, corresponding to the speeds, and engaged by a peg 25 on a three-armed lever 26, connected to the top-speed clutch 28 of the gear and to a main clutch-pedal 27. The follower 14 is freely mounted on a shaft 13, geared to a shaft which carries cams for operating brake-bands and the shaft 13 has fast on it an arm 31, connected by a slotted link 30 with the peg 25. To effect a change, the preselector-rod 20 is set and the pedal 27 is subsequently depressed to free the peg 25 from the notches 29 and allow the springs 22, 23 to move the follower 14 to its new position. Upon releasing the pedal 27, the peg 25 moves through a return distance determined by the setting of the notched follower 14 and, through the link 30, turns the shaft 13 to introduce the selected speed. The notch 29 corresponding to direct-drive is deeper than the others to allow the clutch 28 to engage fully. The pedal 27 thus has a definite position corresponding to each speed. The Provisional Specification states also that a single radial spring may be used in place of the two springs 10, 11, Fig. 3.
