Abstract

530,913. Variable - speed chain gearing. WASDELL, W. K. July 5,1939, No. 19633. [Class 80 (ii)] Gear changing mechanism includes a pair of sprockets 3, 4, carried on a plate 1 which is pivotally mounted on the frame 7 and can be locked in a number of fixed positions. The chain 19 passes round the sprockets 3, 4, and one of the gears 20a, 20b or 20c on the bicycle hub 17. The plate 1 is pivoted in a casing 24 on the frame 7 and is urged to the left, Fig. 1, under spring action controlled by a chain 21. The plate 1 carries an arm 8 having a series of holes 11 into any one of which either one of two plungers 12, 13 may engage to lock the plate 1 relatively to the frame 7. The plungers 12, 13, are fixed to spring levers 12a, 13a, which are fixed at one end 15 to the frame 7, and at the other end engage a plunger 18 which protrudes from the hub 17 when the free-wheel is in operation and is withdrawn when the free-wheel is locked as described in Specification 439,839, [Group XXXI]. To change gear, the plunger 18, or other external means, moves the plungers 12, 13, to release the plate 8 and the chain 21 is operated to permit or cause sideways movement of the chain 19. A spring 28 secured to the plate 8 tensions the chain 19, and the fingers 12a, 13a, are released to permit one of the plungers 12, 13 to engage the plate 8. In a modification the locking device consists of a slidable sleeve which can be slid to clutch the parts 8, 24 together.
