[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] A change - speed gear for cycles comprises a fork member C, Fig. 1, pivoted at A adjacent the rear wheel hub and consisting of two arms rigidly connected together near the frame member F and having a head D for adjustable engagement with a rack or guide D1, D2, the said arms having slots for engaging the spindle E of the driving wheel whereby the tension of the chain may be varied by movement of said fork to permit transfer of the chain from one pinion of the driving wheel to another. When the fork is moved upwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1, the chain becomes slack and may be shifted on to another pinion by the hand or foot. Preferably however, this transfer is effected automatically by a cam member. In the case of three pinions X, Y, Z, Fig. 12, this member has equally spaced profiles 34, 35, 36, 37 and is mounted on a shaft 46, secured in an extension 38, Figs. 9, 10, of the fork, to rotate with a ratchet wheel 39. On upward movement of the fork, the ratchet wheel is rotated by a pawl 41, step-by-step rotation being ensured by a spring 40 engaging the faces of a rectangular neck 43 integral with the wheel. In a modification, Figs. 16 and 17, the cam member is rotated through a dog-clutch 56 by an arm 51 connected by a cable 49 to an operating button 48, step-by-step motion of the member being ensured by means of a spring- pressed plunger 59 engaging successive faces of its neck 58. In an arrangement, Fig. 4, the head of the fork comprises a cross bar 8 connecting pistons 7 in the arms C1, C2, of the fork, the said crossbar engaging in notches 10 in a rack D, secured to the frame F, wings 11, 12 on the bar preventing lateral play in the notches. In other arrangements, of particular use with the modification described with reference to Figs. 16 and 17, the crossbar is secured to a shoe slidable on a guide secured to the frame F, one or two pins on the shoe engaging in notches in the guide to lock the shoe in position.
