Abstract

493,832. Cycle driving mechanism. STETTLER, A. June 7, 1938, No. 16804. [Class 136 (ii)] Supplementary hand driving-mechanism for cycles comprises a hand lever pivoted on the head tube and connected by linkage to a freewheel clutch mechanism on the spindle of the pedal-crank mechanism. A hand lever 3 is pivoted to a clip 2 on the head tube 1 so that it can be oscillated backwards and forwards by means of a handle 5, without interfering in any position with the steering movements of the usual handle-bar 4. A pin 6 on the lever 3 forms a pivot for two strip-steel or other links 7, 8, which are arranged side by side and are so formed as to diverge as shown, towards their lower ends, which are pivoted to levers 12, 11 respectively, mounted freely on the crank spindle 9. The levers 12, 11 carry pawls 15, 14, which alternately drive a ratchet wheel 10 on the spindle 9 in the forward direction only. The ratchet mechanism may be enclosed in a protective casing. The freewheel clutch mechanism may alternatively be of the wedging-roller type.
