Abstract
478,875. Driving - mechanism for tandem bicycles. VREEDE, D. July 19, 1937, No. 19983. Convention date, July 20, 1936. [Class 136 (ii)] In driving - mechanism for tandem bicycles, the transmission gears between the two pairs of pedals and the rear wheel are provided with a plurality of free-wheel devices, the arrangement being such that either pair of pedals can be arrested independently of the other pair, so that either rider or both may freewheel. In the form shown, the second pedal-crank spindle 9 of the transmission train is connected through a free-wheel clutch 10 to the sprocket 6 which drives the rear-wheel hub. The sprocket 6 has a laterally-displaced part 11 on which is mounted, by a free-wheel clutch 12, the sprocket 4 which is driven from the other pedal-crank spindle. In the case of the usual tandem, the spindle 9 constitutes the rear pedal-crank spindle, while in the case of a short tandem in which the rear crank spindle passes through the rear-wheel hub, the spindle 9 constitutes the front crank spindle.
