429,659. Change-speed chain gearing. BOOTH, F., 117, Church Road, Penn Fields, Wolverhampton. July 13, 1934, No. 20553. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] A change-speed gear, for cycles or motorcycles, of the type comprising a main driving chain A passing around a sprocket wheel on an auxiliary axis, as well as around the usual front and rear sprockets, and a second chain passing around another sprocket on the auxiliary axis and another sprocket on the rear hub, is characterized by the wheel on the rear hub, which is engaged by the main chain, being for low gear drive and being a free wheel, whilst operable clutch means are provided for coupling together and uncoupling the wheels on the auxiliary axis ; high gear drive being effected through the medium of a freewheel on either axis. In Fig. 2, the driving chain passes around sprockets B, C and the second chain over sprockets D, E. The hub H of the sprockets C, E is set forwardly of the hub F to increase the angle of engagement of the chain A around the B, and a jockey J increases the angle of engagement around the sprocket C. The wheel C is rotatable on the hub H on interposed rollers h, and the wheel E is a freewheel, the centre of which runs freely on the hub H. Pins Q project through holes in the wheel C and means are provided to slide the pins into, and out of, holes e<1> in the centre of the wheel E whereby the wheels C, E are connected or disconnected. The means comprise a cable S connected to a bell-crank R which bears against a pin P, slidable through the hub H, and carrying a plate p to which the pins Q are secured. A spring p<4> bearing against a washer p<3> spaced from a shoulder p<1> on the pin P by balls p<2>, tends to engage the pins Q in the holes e<1>. When the pins Q are in the holes e<1>, the high gear drive is effected to the hub F through the wheel D, the hub F over-running the freewheel B. When the pins Q are withdrawn, the wheel B effects a direct low gear drive. In a modification, the wheel E is not a free wheel, so that it is locked, for high gear, to the wheel C. The wheel D is a freewheel so that it can be over-run by the hub F. Additional wheels may be provided on both hubs F, H to give additional gear ratios.
