[Also in Groups XXXI and XXXIII] Friction surfaces 241 on a driven sprocket wheel 24 are normally engaged by spring-loaded friction surfaces 261 on spiders 26 axially slidable on splined portions 183 of stub shafts 181, 182 to which the rear wheels of an amphibian vehicle (see Group XXXIII) are connected. Clutch withdrawal rods 30 are engaged by hooks 321 on levers 32 connected through links 33 with sleeves 34 co-operating with a bell crank lever 35 to which is attached a cable 36 from the steering wheel of the vehicle (see Group XXIV). Hence movement of the steering wheel is transmitted to the clutch actuating levers to allow one stub axle to remain in engagement with the sprocket 24 and to disconnect the other therefrom, thus disconnecting one rear wheel from the drive, this producing an effect when cornering analogous to that produced by the differential mechanism of a normal motor vehicle.
