Abstract
492,465. Motor - cycle driving - gear. COVENTRY-EAGLE CYCLE & MOTOR CO., Ltd., and WOODMAN, A. C. June 2,1937, No. 15276. Addition to 475,894. [Class 79 (ii)] In a motor-cycle having a pedal crankshaft a with pedal cranks c, a large sprocket wheel d is fixed on the shaft and is connected to a countershaft or the rear wheel hub n, through a chain and a free-wheel sprocket o while a small sprocket e loose on the pedal shaft is connected by a chain to a chain wheel p and is driven from the engine shaft i through a friction clutch g. Thus the rear wheel can be driven from the pedals through one chain and the free-wheel o, or from the engine through the clutch and the other chain. When used to start the engine the pedals drive the clutch member f through the double multiplying gear formed by the two chains. The engine shaft i drives the clutch g through worm gear h, and the clutch can be disengaged by means of an arm controlled by the driver. When the engine is not working it can be disconnected from the road wheels, without disengaging the clutch g, by sliding the pedal shaft to the left to disengage dog teeth e<1> on the sprocket e and the clutch member f. This can be done by the rider pressing his feet against the pedals in the required direction. A spring pin q engages one of two grooves in the pedal shaft and holds it in either selected position. According to the Provisional Specification the engine may drive through a belt instead of a chain.
