Abstract

426,044. Hand driving mechanism. BICHEL, H. C. D., 1, Christiansborggade, Copenhagen. Nov. 1, 1934, No. 31390. [Class 136 (ii)] In mechanism for propelling or assisting in propelling a cycle by oscillating movements of a one-piece handlebar adapted to drive the front wheel, the drive is transmitted to the wheel through two speed-increasing chains and a freewheel device fitted to one of the chain wheels, means being provided for locking the handlebar when the drive from it is not required. The handle-bar 1 is rotatably mounted in a bearing 2 in a member 3 projecting forwardly from the handle-bar stem 4, and is provided with a chain wheel 5 connected by a chain 6 to a smaller chain wheel 7 on an intermediate shaft 8, and thence by a larger chain wheel 10 and chain 11 to a free-wheel sprocket 12 on the front wheel hub. The handle-bar 1 may be locked against vertical rocking movement by means of a spring-actuated pin 16 adapted to engage a hole in a fixed disc 15, under the control of a hand lever 17.
