Abstract
1293296 Cycles J W NEWMAN 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 24053/71 Heading B7E A cycle is provided with a flywheel 32 adapted to be rotated by pedals 44 via a chain and sprocket mechanism 42 and a belt and pulley mechanism 46, 52, 54, energy stored in the flywheel being selectively transmitted to the rear wheels 20 via a positive engagement clutch 56 and a belt and pulley mechanism 80, 82, 84. A lever 98, via flexible cables 102,104, is operable to selectively disengage both a brake on the rear wheel axle and the clutch, or to engage either the clutch or the brake. A wheel 106 limits the amount to which the front wheel 26 can lift from the ground when the energy stored in the flywheel is applied to the rear wheels. The flywheel is arranged to rotate in the direction opposite to that of the wheels 20 and may be slightly out of balance to produce a vibratory motion of the cycle. In a modification the cycle may be provided with two front wheels and the flywheel arranged to rotate in the same direction as the rear wheels. Alternatively the cycle may comprise a bicycle with the flywheel formed in two halves, one on either side of the rear wheel with the axis thereof to the rear of the rear wheel. The seat may be arranged to occupy two alternative positions, one for use when the pedals are being operated and the other when the cycle is in motion.
