Abstract

1,144,168. Pedal crank transmissions. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. 13 June, 1966 [15 June, 1965], No. 26231/66. Heading B7E. A pedal car, Fig. 1 (not shown), drives a pair of rear wheels through a chain and freewheel unit connected by a coupling to a rear wheel drive shaft. The freewheel unit, Fig. 2, comprises a sprocket wheel 30 fixed to an input component 38 rotatably mounted on a fixed sleeve 24 rotatably supporting a rear wheel drive shaft 14. An output component 40 connected to the shaft. 14 by a coupling plate 82 and a bent over lug 88, is also connected by selective engagement of a circular spring 64 with one of the pawls 54, 56, Fig. 4, and with the input component 38. The pawls are biased outwardly by a spring 58. The pawl support 50 is connected by means of a claw coupling 52 to the component 38 and the ring 64 is frictionally connected with a support member 66 non- rotatably mounted on the sleeve 24, and the ring 64 is connected with the support 50 by a lug 68 engaging stop faces 70, 72 on the support. When the part 38 and the support 50 are rotating in the direction of the arrow, the pawls 54 protrude through hole 74 in the ring 64 and engages and drives the output component 40, the lug 68 co-operating with the stop 70. When the direction of rotation is reversed the ring 64 is braked by friction with the support 66 and does not turn with it until the stop 72 engages with lug 68 so that the pawl 54 moving with the ratchet support 50 relative to ring 64 is moved out of engagement with the teeth 60 as the aperture 74 is moved away from pawl 54 and the other pawl 56 moves through the hole 76 to engage and drive the teeth 60. When the output component 40 runs faster in either driven direction than the input component 38 then no motion is transmitted due to the pawls. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the support member 66 is connected to a fixed block (92) whilst in Fig. 5 (not shown) the part (12) is the input, (112), (124), are the pawls, (130) is the spring ring, and the output sleeve (110) drives the shaft 14 via a cross-pin (112) in a hole (114) in the sleeve. In Fig. 6 (not shown) rotation of the input (218) screws a double cone (236) in one or the other direction until it drives the output sleeve (226) and the shaft 14 via coupling (228).
