Abstract

1,135,818. Ratchet clutches. HONDA GIJUTSU KENKYUSHO, K.K. 15 May, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 22506/67. Heading F2C. A cycle free wheel comprises a chain driven wheel 2 with ratchet teeth 2A, a hub 1 mounting pawls 3, a spring 4 urging the pawls outwardly, and a corrugated spring ring 7 having integral claws 5, 6 as shown. In operation the ring 7 is frictionally pressed against a side surface of the wheel 2 by a thrust washer (11), Fig. 1 (not shown), so that as the wheel 2 and ring 7 rotate clockwise, Fig. 6, the claws 5, 6 move to one end of a groove 8 in the hub and allow the pawls 3 to spring up and engage the teeth 2A, and as the wheel and ring move in the other direction the claws move to the other end of the groove 8 so that the claw 6 over-rides and holds down the pawls 3 free of the teeth 2A. If the wheel 2 is held stationary in the Fig. 6 position then relative movement takes place until the Fig. 7 position is reached.
