Abstract
804,533. Ratchet clutches. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. Oct. 3, 1956 [Nov. 24, 1955], No. 30177/56. Class 80 (2). A silent freewheel clutch, for a change-speed and back-pedal cycle hub 1, comprising pawls 4 pivotally carried on pins 5 on an output ring- gear of the gear and outwardly spring pressed to engage ratchet teeth 2a in the driven hub 1, has a pawl-control drag-ring 3, frictionally mounted in the ratchet ring 2a by outwardlyspringing tongues 9, and having slots 7 receiving the pawls 4 in driving position. When, on cessation of pedalling, the hub 1 overruns the stationary pawls 4 (in the direction of the arrow), the drag-ring 3 is carried round frictionally with the hub, and the leading ends 16 of the ring- slots 7 engage the pawls 4 and fold them down under the drag-ring 3, further ring movement being arrested by inturned parts 8. The pawls are thus held out of contact with the ratchet teeth, overrun is silent, and possible locking of the hub due to re-engagement of the pawls during back-pedal braking is prevented. When forward pedalling is resumed, the drag-ring 3 remains behind with the hub, and the pawls 4 move forwards and spring out through the ring slots 7 into driving engagement.
