Abstract
567,312. Freewheel clutches. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and STOHANZL, V. J. Aug. 13, 1943, No. 13121. [Class 80 (ii)] A freewheel clutch comprises a sprocket wheel 23 with ratchet teeth 21 co-operating with pawls 7 carried in an inner member 1. A spring 11 for each pawl 7 is slidably supported in a narrow slot 9 in the member 1 and has a portion 13 engageable with a pawl and a portion 19 engaging a ratchet tooth 21. In the driving position shown, the part 13 holds the pawl 7 in its engaging position. If the rotation of the sprocket 23 is stopped the pawl is pressed inwardly and pushes the spring 11 to the left, Fig. 2, so that the device freewheels silently. When the sprocket is again rotated the end of the portion 19 is engaged by a ratchet tooth to move the spring 11 to the right and re-engage the pawl 7 . A pin 27 guides the spring 11. In a modification, the spring 11 is of U -shape and is slidably guided in its slot by a grooved plug.
