Abstract

797,870. Differential gear. PATENT DEVELOPERS, Inc. Oct. 22, 1956 [Dec. 12, 1955], No. 32066/56. Class 80 (2). In a differential mechanism wherein the driving and driven clutch elements are automatically disengaged on over- or under-running, a cam member is mounted within the driving member to provide axial de-clutching movement, and hold-out rings are provided on each driven member to retain the clutches disengaged as long as the relative velocities of the clutch members differ, the hold-out rings having at least one axially projecting lug and at least one circumferential peripheral slot offset from the lug. In a differential mechanism of the kind described in Specification 715,445, particularly for use in two-wheel tractors, the inner cam member 27 is rotatably secured to the centre driving member 26 with a backlash equivalent to that between the driving and driven clutch teeth, by a key 59 in the member 26 and slots 58 in the cam member. A series of circumferentially longer slots 54 in the cam member 27 are provided to coact with the stepped lugs 62 of the hold-out rings 31, these lugs having a long step 65 forward of the central tongue 62 and a short step 66 rearward of the tongue. These provide for overrun of either wheel with continued overrunning during reversals of driving torque and for underrunning when the vehicle is coasting forwardly.
