Abstract

714,036. Differential gearing; one-way clutches. PATENT DEVELOPERS, Inc. Nov. 24, 1952 [Dec. 3, 1951], No. 29618/52. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXXI] In a differential gear, comprising an over- 'running clutch having toothed members disengaged by cam means, hold-out means are provided to maintain the cam means disengaged so long as overrunning continues. As shown for application to the transfer box of a fourwheel-drive vehicle (see Group XXXI) a gear wheel 30, Fig. 3, bolted to the differential casing 28 is driven from the vehicle engine. A member 35 also secured to the casing 28 has radial teeth 47 on each face engageable with teeth 48 on members 36, 37 splined at 52, 53 to shafts 33, 34 respectively connected to the front and rear axles of the vehicle. The member 37 is held permanently in engagement with the member 35 by a ring 55. A spring 40 bears against a ring 42 splined to the shaft 33 and against the member 36 which it urges toward engagement with the member 35. Cam teeth 50 on the members 36, 37 urge the member 36 out of engagement with the member 35 when the shaft 33 rotates faster than the shaft 34. Hold-out rings 38, 39 are axially fixed - relatively to, and frictionally rotatably connected to, members 36, 37 by polygonal spring rings 59 disposed in. circumferential grooves 60 in those members. Each ring 38, 39 has axially directed projections 58 provided with shoulders 63 which, when the member 36 is cammed from the engaged position shown in Fig. 7, to the disengaged position shown in Figs. 8 and 3, co-operate to move and maintain the camming teeth 50 out of engagement. Thrust washers 61 are provided between the rings 38, 39 and the members 36, 37. The projections 58 are so proportioned that in the engaged position of the member 36. (Fig. 7) they overlap by an amount x which is at least equal to, and preferably slightly greater than, the axial length of the cam teeth 50. In a modification, Figs. 9-11 (not shown), the gear is not symmetrical and only one hold-out ring is provided which co-operates directly with a member on the shaft 34. Specifications 560,648 and 561,350 are referred to.
