Abstract

884,236. Positive clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. Aug. 12, 1960 [Aug. 13, 1959], No. 28078/60. Class 80 (2). The positive clutch described in Specification 778,888 is modified by providing synchronizing means. Change-speed wheels 2, 3 are freely mounted on an output shaft 5 and are clutched thereto by pins 16 slidable axially in grooves in a sleeve 18 which is slidably splined to a carrier 8 fast with the output shaft. The sleeve 18 is formed with synchronizing friction clutch cones 32, 33 engageable with friction cones 35, 36 formed on the wheels 2, 3 and is coupled to the pins 16 by spring-loaded balls 42, so that when the pins are shifted by means of a collar 22 to clutch one of the wheels to the shaft, the friction cones 32, 35 or 33, 36 first engage to synchronize the wheel and shaft, and then the balls 42 yield and the pins engage recesses 25 or 26 in the wheels to positively clutch them to the shaft. The balls 42 engage recesses 48, 49 in the pins to locate them in their clutching positions. It is not necessary that every pin be coupled to the shaft by a spring-pressed ball 42, only one pin in three need be so coupled. The springs may be of the plate or of the helical type.
