Abstract

614,410. Friction clutches. ENQUIST, G. T. H. Oct. 29, 1945, No. 28560. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a friction clutch or brake between a shaft and a member sleeved thereon, of the kind having oppositely-acting friction ratchets mounted in one member and engageable with the other to prevent relative rotation, disengagement is effected by relative axial movement of the members to bring the friction ratchets opposite a freely rotatable ring mounted in the other member. As shown, shafts 11, 20, Fig. 6, either or both of which may be rotatable, are connected and disconnected by sliding a sleeve 13 splined to the shaft 11 to the right or left so that spring-pressed balls or rollers 14, Fig. 7, mounted in a squared recess 24 in the shaft 20 coact either with the sleeve 13 or with a freely rotatable ring 16 mounted therein. A stop 17 limits the movement of the sleeve 13, which may be constructed in two parts to facilitate assembly. A modification has a sleeve integral with one shaft end and a, ratchet recess 7, Fig. 5, of elliptical cross-section, in which case either balls or segmental ratchets 9 may be used. In Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), the squaresection ratchet recess is in the outer member, which is a spur gear slidable along its shaft to coact directly therewith or with the outer race of a ball-bearing mounted therein.
