Abstract

495,068. Rectilinear-motion bearings. HOY & CO., Ltd., A., and HOY, A. Y. May 26, 1937, No. 14663. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] An axially slidable clawmember 16 of an overload slipping clutch 14, 16, is mounted on a rolling key connection, comprising balls or rollers 26, in complementary grooves 44, 42 in the claw-member 16 and in a shaft 12 which supports and drives it, and the grooves are provided with yielding means, such as a light spring or a synthetic rubber cylinder or ball 58, which is compressed by the rolling movement of the balls or rollers 26 as the claw-member moves axially in the disengaging direction. Such yielding means ensures that the balls or rollers 26 will normally be held away from the end of the groove 42, so that disengaging movement of the clawmember 16 always results in rolling of the balls or rollers 26 instead of sliding thereof. The grooves 42, 44 are of V-section, e.g. of rightangle section, to result in point-contact for balls and line-contact for rollers; giving rolling without rubbing friction. There is an appreciable clearance 46 between the slidable clawmember 16 and its shaft 12, to allow the clawmember to centre itself in the radial direction. Adjacent rollers 26 of each row are oppositely inclined to each other, to transmit torque in either direction. In the form shown in Fig. 5, there are two slidable claw-members 72, 74, connected to a hollow casing 78 by rows of balls 50 in complementary V-section grooves in the casing and claw-members. A rubber cylinder 86 or light spring opposes the inward rolling movement of the balls 50. Spacing pieces may be interposed between adjacent balls to reduce the number required in each row.
