553,673. Bearings. KIGASS, Ltd., and WARDMAN, C.B. Nov. 25,1941, No. 15163. [Class 12(i)] A bearing comprises a number of floating members each provided with holes extending through the member and acting as lubricant reservoirs. The members consists of parallel discs for an end-thrust bearing or concentric annular sleeves for a journal bearing, or both discs and sleeves may be used. In the case of a journal bearing, Fig. 1, a sleeve 1 is secured to journal 2 and is engaged by four concentric floating sleeves 9 - - 12 within a wheel hub 3; the sleeves being retained by end plates 4, 5, wedge shaped packing 8 being carried by the hub. The sleeves have apertures 13 which may be arranged as a helix, the helices having an equal or a varying pitch, and the diameter of the apertures may increase as the diameter of each sleeve increases. Each aperture may consist of a central hole leading to a number of shallow radiating grooves on each surface. The lubricant may be injected through an axial passage 14 and through a duct 15 and channel 16 in the fixed sleeve 1. Consecutive discs or sleeves may be made of different metals, such as steel, phosphor or lead bronze, and compressed brass powder, oil impregnated. The end plates 4, 5 may also have lubricant holes or depressions.
