Abstract

430,967. Shaft couplings. HASLAM, E. V., 26, Collingwood Street, Newcastle-on- Tyne. Dec. 27, 1934, No. 37047. [Class 80 (ii)] One of the shafts A to be coupled is connected to or formed with a screw comprising two oppositely - threaded parts A<1>, A<2> each carrying a nut D adapted to screw into engagement with a smooth rigid face E<2> on a housing C mounted on the other shaft B, the whole being so arranged that during drive slip occurs between the face of the nut and the face of the housing in engagement therewith. The nuts may be drawn towards the engaging position by the viscosity of the oil in the housing or by the friction between the nuts and the housing. The housing may be provided with a smooth-faced partition G, which is engaged by the nuts, after slight lost motion, when the drive is reversed. The faces of the nuts and/or the housing may be provided with spiral oil grooves, not shown, to minimize the tendency to jamming of the nuts.
