Abstract

477,537. Variable - speed gearing. SVEDA, V. July 1, 1936, No. 18307. Convention date, July 3, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] The driving shaft carries an expanding wheel 3, 4 engaging a ring of balls 11 which rotate in a stationary cage 12 and thus drive a pair of races 7, 8 connected to the casing 6 on the driven shaft 2 by balls 13 located in converging channels 14 between the outer faces of the races 7, 8 and the casing 6. Axial pressure developed by the balls 13 presses the races 7, 8 together, thus forcing the balls 11 inwardly and separating the parts 3, 4 of the expanding wheel against-the. action of springs 5. The position of the balls 11 on the bevelled surfaces 9, 10 of the gear members 3, 4, 7, 8, and hence the gear ratio is thus determined automatically by the torque in the driven shaft. To reduce the pressure on the balls 13, two gear arrangements as described above may be arranged in parallel.
