450,749. Differential gearing. LAVAUD, D. S. DE, 82, Rue de le Jonquiere, Paris. Dec. 30, 1935, No. 35987. Convention date, Jan. 4. [Class 80 (ii)] In a differential gear, a set of friction discs 25, 27 is arranged on each side of a central ring 19 secured to a driving drum 9, alternate discs of each set being splined in a loose drum 23 and on a hub 17 secured to the corresponding driven shaft 15, each set being arranged between an end flange of the drum 9 and a pressure plate 29 splined in the corresponding drum 23. Balls 43 engage between conical recesses 37 in the ring 19 and conical recesses 39 in the plates 29. Socket members 31 secured to one of the plates 29 and passing through elongated slots in the ring 19 slidably receive spring-loaded plungers 34 provided with conical ends engaging conical recesses 36 in the other plate 29, whereby limited angular movement between the two plates 29 is permitted against the action of the springs 33, which latter also lightly load the friction discs. During drive in either direction, the balls 43 coact with the recesses 37, 39 to apply pressure to the plates 29, while, on one of the driven shafts overrunning, the corresponding balls cause a reduction of the pressure and slipping occurs.
