Abstract

162,796. Griffin, S. Feb. 5, 1920. Clutches; friction.-In friction clutch devices which tend to become disengaged under excessive load by the relative displacement of spring- pressed cam-surfaces driving one another through interposed rollers &c., the female member b of a cone clutch' is rigidly secured to a driving- shaft b<1>, and the male member c bears freely on the end thereof, being secured to an axially movable intermediate shaft c<1>, which runs in a fixed bearing d and carries at its other extremity a member c<2> having cam-faces c<3> adapted to trans-. mit the drive through balls, rollers, &c. f to a disc e provided with corresponding faces e<1>. The disc e is coupled by a drum e<2> to a driven shaft e' axially aligned with the shafts b<1>, c<1>, and runs freely on the shaft c<1>, the axial driving-thrust being taken by ball bearings d<1>. The balls &c. f may be located by short pins, springs, &c. disposed on each side of or around each ball &c. Normally the clutch is engaged by a spring g<2> which thrusts on the bearing d through balls g<3> and a sliding-collar g, by means of which the spring-load, and hence the limiting transmitted torque can be varied.
