Abstract
324,792. Humfrey-Sandberg Co., Ltd., and Humfrey, J. C. W. Jan. 17, 1929. Clutches, slipping and free-wheel.-In order to avoid failure in the engagement and disengagement of skew-roller clutches due to the action of torque on the axially-movable conoid, the driving and driven members are made axially immovable, a floating member in contact with the rollers being allowed axial freedom to effect jamming and release. The invention is applicable to the unidirectional ratchet clutches described in Specification 239,894, to the slipping clutches described in Specification 248,183, and to the modified forms described in Specification 295,481, wherein the rollers are shaped to have line contact with one conical or cylindrical element. Oppositely-tapered conoids 1, 2, Fig. 3, are rigid with driving and driven shafts 9, 10 and coact with concentric rows of skewed rollers 3, 4, which contact with the annular floating member 5. The member 5 is pressed into engagement by springs 6, the limiting torque being adjusted by a flanged screwed ring 20, contacting with an abutment-plate 17 and locked by a nut 23. Fig. 4 shows a ratchet clutch without torque-limitation, in which the driving-member 8 has connected to it by splines 25, 26 a cage 24, and the single row of rollers 3, confined between projections 28 thereon, coacts with the driven inner conoid 2 and a spring- pressed floating outer conoid 30. The cage 24 is axially located between a shoulder 35 on the conoid 2 and a ring 34 on the shaft 10. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the outer conoid is fixed to the driven shaft, the cage is splined directly on the driving-shaft, and the outer conoid floats. A single spring, coaxial with the shafts, presses on the inner conoid through a ball thrust bearing. The rollers may be placed singly between the cage-projections 28, which have concave sides to fit them, or may be disposed in groups between flat-sided projections 28, as shown in Fig. 10. A reversible form, embodying two clutches of the type described with reference to Fig. 4, is shown in Fig. 12. The cage 24, splined to the driving- member 8, runs between shoulders on the rigid inner conoids 2b, 2<c>, two sets of similarly inclined rollers 3, 3<a>, or a single set of long rollers, lying between the driven conoids and two floating conoids 30<b>, 30<c>, pressed apart by springs 6. Slip is determined by slidable collars 47, 48, which act on the conoids 30<b>, 30<c> respectively by balls 51 and pins 52 and balls 54. The second Provisional Specification describes the cage as being similar to that described in Specification 239,894.
