Abstract
331,508. Thomas, W. F., and Coventry Gearless Motors, Ltd. April 2, 1929. Clutches, friction.-A clutch between a driving and a driven shaft comprises a series of rollers which are wedged between surfaces on the shafts to provide a bidirectional drive, and is arranged so that the rollers may be withdrawn to an inoperative position. A collar c, having splined engagement with the driving-shaft a has a polygonal exterior which co-operates with rollers h and a flange k on the driven shaft b to produce a wedging action in both directions. The rollers are held in position by a ring g on the collar, which is normally pressed into the engaging position by a spring o, held by a collar m secured to the shaft a, and can be moved for disengagement of the rollers by a grooved striking-sleeve q rotating on ball bearings r carried by a flanged member p threaded on the collar c. The axes of the rollers are parallel to the internal surface of the coned flange k.
