Abstract

Clutches.-In load-limiting clutches, spring- pressed friction elements are driven by antifriction means acting to separate them with a force proportional to the driving torque in either direction of rotation. A driving-member 10, Fig. 1, contains in symmetrical cam-like depressions 21 balls 24, which engage also tapering depressions 22, 23 in loose discs 18, 19. These discs are drawn together by adjustable springs 20 and normally press into contact friction plates 15, 16 splined to the driven shaft 13 and slidable on pins 17 respectively. On predetermined overload, the balls 24 wedge the discs 18, 19 apart and allow slip. In order to minimize error due to variation in the coefficient of friction of the clutch plates, the bulk of the spring load is designed to be taken by the balls 24 when drive is being transmitted. In a preferred modification, the driving-member 10<a>, Fig. 3, has a central flange with conical pockets 21a on both sides to receive balls 24<a>, 24b which engage conical pockets 22<a>, 23a in the pressure-discs 18<a>, 19<a>. The clutch spring is formed by dished discs 20a, adjusted by screws 17a, which are locked in set position by engagement of the turned-up edge of one disc 20<a> with notches 27 in their heads.
