Abstract

499,882. Friction clutches. BAILEY, R. W. H. July 31, 1937, No. 21263. [Class 80 (ii)] Between the driven plate A and the pressure plate C of a plate clutch is interposed a plate E which is connected for rotation with the plate C while being urged away from the latter by a series of leaf springs disposed directly between the opposing faces of the plates C and E. Friction facings A<1> may be carried either by the plate A or by the plate E and the axiallyfixed driving plate. Leaf springs F, riveted at their ends to the plates C and E respectively, may constitute both the cushioning springs and the means for connecting the plates for rotation. These springs may be inclined all in the same direction or adjacent springs may be oppositely inclined. The cushioning action of the springs F may be supplemented by coil springs G, Fig. 4, or by doubly-bowed leaf springs H, Fig. 6, the bowed ends of which are riveted to the plate C (or E). Alternatively the springs F may be omitted, the springs H, in addition to being riveted at their bowed ends to the plate C (or E), being riveted at their centre to the plate E (or C), so as to connect the two plates for rotation. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that the shape of the springs H provides a twostage engaging action of the clutch.
