Abstract

422,418. Friction clutches. SOC. ANON. A. CITROEN, 143, Quai de Javel, Paris. July 10, 1933, No. 19476. Convention date, March 2. [Class 80 (ii)] The driven plate 1, Fig. 1, of a friction clutch is resiliently coupled to its hub 4 by means of a disc 5 of rubber or other resilient material, the side faces of which adhere, as by vulcanization, to plates 6, 7 secured respectively to the plate 1 and to the hub. A disc 5 may be arranged on each side of the plate, as shown. The plates 6, 7 are so shaped that the thickness of the disc 5 at any point is proportional to its distance from the axis, so as to equalize the torsional stress in the disc. The plate 1 may be rigidly centred on the hub or may be capable of radial play, in which latter case the plate may be resiliently centred through the medium of a rubber ring 17. In the form shown in Fig. 3, a single rubber disc 16 adheres to a part 8 of the clutch plate 8 and to a conical plate 9 secured to the hub 9. When a predetermined torsional stress in the disc 16 is exceeded, a positive connection, comprising fingers 9 on the plate 9 engaging slots 8 in the plate 8, comes into operation. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the rubber disc 20 is extended beneath the clutch plate 18 so as resiliently to centre the latter, and a friction washer 21 is arranged between the other side of the plate 18 and a plate 19 rigid with the hub, to provide a frictional damping means. In the multiplate clutch shown in Fig. 5, a rubber disc 14 is associated with each side of each clutch plate 10, the co-operating plates 11 being splined on the hub 12. Stops 13 are provided to limit the movement of the plates 11 and a spring 15 is interposed between adjacent plates 11. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the rubber disc 20, Fig. 7, may be further extended to replace the friction washer 21, and the spring 15, Fig. 5, may be replaced by a rubber washer. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
