Abstract

Clutches allowing slip or lost motion. - In friction clutches of the type in which torque is transmitted to spring-loaded members through cam-surfaces tending to effect disengagement, inclined-tooth cam-surfaces are formed on the face of a flange 14, Fig. 1, extending from a sleeve 12 splined to one shaft 8, coacting surfaces 16 being formed on plates 15 pressed by adjustable springs 19. The inclined teeth on the parts 14, 15 may have sufficient clearance to allow for wear of the clutch plates 21, 11, which slide respectively on bolts 17 and on splines on a drum 10 carried by the second shaft 9. A spring-pressed plunger 52 engaging teeth or notches 54 may be provided to give audible warning of slip. In a modification, the springs 19 bear on a flange 22, Fig. 2, of a sleeve 23, controllable through a spring 27 and sleeve 25 by a pedal 28 to vary the critical load during running. The clutch may be operable in both directions of rotation or in one only.
