566,565. Differential gearing. THORNTON TANDEM CO. Nov. 30, 1942, No. 11993/44. Convention date, June 2, 1942. Divided out of 563,289. [Class 80 (ii)] An axle differential for two opposed shafts 10, 11, comprises a pair of driving clutch members 16,16, with teeth 19, a pair of driven clutch members 17, 17, each having clutch teeth 20 and clutch disengaging cam teeth 21, and a pair of clutch disengaging members 18 with cam teeth 18<1> engaging the cam teeth 21, the said cam teeth 21 being curved in a radial direction so that the line of tooth contact is near the centre of the cam teeth whereby chipping at the edges of the teeth is prevented and friction between the cam teeth is reduced during clutch engagement and disengagement. The clutch members 16, 16, are driven by a housing 12. If one shaft tends to overrun the camming action between the corresponding cam teeth 18, 21, causes disengagement of the corresponding clutch teeth 19, 20.
