Abstract
605,097. Synchromeshed positive clutches. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd., and GRINHAM, E. G. Dec. 14, 1945, No. 33861. [Class 80 (ii)] In order to permit true alignment between the engaging friction cones 30, 35 of a synchromesh clutch, the axially movable internally or externally coned balk-ring 30 has radial clearance (0.015 in.) in the hub-member 17, or gear which carries it, and is arranged on one side of the hub-member, with axially projecting lugs 32 engaging clearance-slots in the hub to provide the required circumferential lost-motion. The hub 17 is externally splined to carry the usual splined sliding clutch-sleeve 21, which engages clutch teeth 26 on one or both sides and is retained in the neutral position by spring ball-detents 24. To facilitate breaking down the oil-film, either cone-surface may have a helical groove, left or right-handed according to the direction of rotation.
