Abstract

350,878. Back-pedalling brake and free-wheel arrangements. POIRIER, G., 28 bis, Quai Marmoutier, St.-Symphorien, Loire, France. Nov. 26, 1930, No. 35551. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1929. [Class 136 (ii).] A free-wheel and back-pedalling brake hub for tricycles, invalid carriages, &c., is adapted to enable the road wheel to be driven in the reverse direction, by the use of ratchet mechanism interposed between the cycle &c. fork and a member carrying the brake band &c., and adapted to prevent rotation of such member in the forward direction, but to allow its rotation in the backward direction, with sufficient friction to permit of the operation of the brake. The driving chainwheel 16 is mounted on a sleeve 15 having a screw thread 17 engaging a member 18, which drives the hub 11 in the forward direction (arrow F) through pawl-and-ratchet mechanism 19 permitting a freewheel action. On back-pedalling (arrow B), the member 18 is traversed by the thread 17 to engage its conical clutch part with a cup 22, which then, through a stud 24, rocks a lever 25 about its pivot 26 on a plate 27, to expand a band 31 into contact with a brake drum 32. The plate 27 is fixed to a member 28, which engages a conical member 29 fixed on the spindle 10 and carries non-rotatably a ratchet wheel 34, Figs. 1 and 3, engaging a spring-pressed pawl 35 on an arm 38, which has a ring-shaped lower end encircling the member 28 and is fixed at its upper end to the cycle fork. During back-pedalling, friction between the members 28, 29 provides a sufficiently firm anchorage for the pivot 26 of the brake lever 25 to enable the brake to be applied. The ratchet mechanism 34, 35, by allowing backward rotation of the member 28, enables the wheel to be driven in the reverse direction through the clutch 18, 22 and the brake mechanism and drum 32.
