422,499. Free-wheel mechanism for cycles. POWELL, A., 62, Waterloo Road, Stockport. Sept. 19, 1933, No. 25830. [Class 136 (ii)] In free-wheel driving- mechanism for cycles, of the type in which the ratchet teeth are formed with an abutment face at each end to enable the freewheel to be locked, when a fixed-wheel drive is required, by means of an additional pawl acting in opposition to the usual pawls, the additional pawl is mounted on a shaft A<1> provided with a bent end A<2> adapted to form a lever arm whereby the pawl is rocked into and out of engagement with the ratchet teeth by control means actuated from a lever on the handlebar &c. The arm A<2> normally engages a tapered collar I slidably mounted on a distancesleeve H on the wheel spindle H<1> and adapted to be retracted against the action of a spring K by means of a member Y, which engages a flange J on the collar, is linked to a bracket X on the fork H<2>, and is actuated by a Bowden or other transmission V ; the additional pawl is then rocked into engagement with the ratchet by a spring acting on it. The shaft A<1> passes through an opening in the side plate D of the free-wheel casing, and this opening is closed by a plate which is formed with a bearing for the shaft A<1>. The free-wheel casing may be prevented from screwing off the hub when the fixed drive is in operation, by means of a through bolt &c.
