[Class 136 (ii)] Drive-transmitting mechanism for pedal or manually driven cycles and other vehicles comprises in combination a lay shaft, means for establishing such two-way driving connection between the lay shaft and a road wheel that the former rotates at a higher speed than the latter, a flywheel fast on the lay shaft, and, for establishing driving connection between a pedal or manually driven shaft and the lay shaft, means including a freewheel device and change-speed gearing enabling gear changes to be effected while the vehicle is in motion. As shown diagrammatically in the Figure, a pedal shaft 12 drives a lay-shaft 13 for low gear through a sprocket 16, chain 15, and a sprocket 19 fitted with a oneway or freewheel connection with the shaft 13, on which is mounted a flywheel 14 and which is connected by' a small sprocket 28, chain 30, and a larger sprocket 29 to the rear road wheel, the flywheel thus rotating at a higher speed than the road wheel. For high gear, a slidable dog-clutch 24 is engaged with a member 23, whereby the chain 15 drives through a sprocket 17, free-wheel sprocket 22, chain 20, and sprocket 21 on the lay-shaft 13, which overruns the free-wheel sprocket 19. In addition, change-speed gearing of known type may be mounted in the rear wheel hub, or at other parts of the transmission. The lay-shaft 13 is journalled in a fixed casing within which the flywheel is located, and which carries the change-speed gearing. When attached to the frame tubes of an existing bicycle, the casing has projecting lugs for attachment to clips on the frame tubes.
