Abstract
824,642. Cycle driving-mechanism. HUMPHREY, A. J. V. Jan. 12, 1956 [Dec. 30, 1954; May 23, 1955], Nos. 29441/54 and 14759/55. Class 136(2) A geared drive for bicycles or pedal driven vehicles or boats incorporates a flywheel and means for rotating the flywheel through a driving mechanism in which the energy of the rotating flywheel is adapted to be transmitted through clutch means directly to a main driven member independently of the driving mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1, the gearing for a bicycle is mounted on a frame, the middle part of which is formed with frame members 1, 2, 3 and 4 provided in parallel pairs and connected by welding to upright frame members 5, 6 and 7. The pedal crank sprocket wheel 9 is connected through chain gearing, pinions and sprocket wheels to a pinion 15 mounted on a shaft 16 which supports the flywheel 17. A pinion 18 is also mounted on the shaft 16. A clutch 19 is provided to connect or disconnect the flywheel to the pinion 18. The pinion 18 is connected via chain gearing, a sprocket wheel 21 and a pinion 22 to a pinion 24 mounted on.the fixed spindle 25 of the real wheel of the bicycle. The pedal cranks 8 drive both the rear-wheel 26 and the flywheel 17, the energy of the rotating flywheel 17 being added to or substituted for the energy derived from the rotation of the cranks as and when desired by the utilization of the clutch 19. In a modification shown in Fig. 3 the flywheel 31 is mounted on a spindle 25 of the rear-wheel. The drive from the crank pedal is transmitted through gears 33, 34, 35 mounted on a bracket 38 secured on the spindle and operated to drive a circular rack 39 mounted on the inner periphery of the casing surrounding the gearing.
