516,700. Treadle driving - mechanism for cycles &c. BARBARO, I. BENCIVENGA.- July 5, 1938, No. 19916. [Class 136 (ii)] In treadle driving-mechanism for bicycles, delivery cycles &c. each treadle lever carries a freely-mounted pinion, which is rotated by movement over a toothed segment so as to .drive, through a free-wheel mechanism, a spindle geared to the driven road wheel of the vehicle. A treadle lever 1 on each side of the cycle is pivoted on a shaft 6, and its short arm 2 carries a freely-mounted pinion 3 gearing with a fixed toothed sector 4, which may be rigid with a casing enclosing the gearing. The pinion 3 gears with a pinion 5 coupled by a free-wheel device to the shaft 6, to which is keyed a sprocket-wheel 7, connected by a chain to a free-wheel sprocket 12 on the driving wheel of the cycle. The treadle levers 1 are interconnected for alternate operation by means of rods 11, each of which has a pin-and-slot connection with the lever 1 and is fixed to a pinion 10 in the bottom bracket, the two pinions 10 meshing with one another.
