Abstract

588,055. Conveying rotary motion. PHELPS, A. E. Dec. 27, 1944, No. 25913. [Class 80 (i)] Power transmission mechanism, for a pedal or motor-cycle, comprises springs 20, which are repeatedly compressed by diametrically-opposed cams 18 on a driving-shaft 15, acting on the springs through reciprocating plungers 19, the expansions of the springs serving to drive a driven crankshaft 30 through rods 26 pivoted on the plungers 19. The driving camshaft 15 is also permanently connected to the driven crankshaft 30 by toothed wheels 47, 48, 31, to equalize the pressure exerted on the driving pedals. In the pedal cycle drive shown, a pedal crankshaft 14 drives the camshaft 15 through a toothed pair 17, 16, when the device is mounted near the bottom bracket of the cycle, or through chaingearing when it is mounted near the rear spindle. The driven crankshaft 30 drives through a toothed pair 31, 32, and a two-speed gear having a triple sliding-wheel 36 and parallel driving and driven shafts 33, 39, a sprocket 44 driving the rear hub through a chain.
