Abstract

611,750. Togglepresses. BOBST & FILS SOC. ANON., J. April 17, 1946. No. 11904. Convention date, April 18, 1945. [Class 87 (ii)] The moving platen 5 of a press is actuated by four toggles, two of which are shown at 6 and 7, situated at the corners of a quadrilateral and operated by four connecting rods 9, 10, 11, 12 pivoted at one end to the knuckle joints of the toggles and at the o her to the crank pins of a four throw crankshaft 14. The throws are arranged in two pairs on either side of a central driving wheel 13, the members of each pair being diametrically opposed. This eliminates side thrust on the platen and its guides. The driving gear is positioned entirely within the space defined by the four toggles and can be totally enclosed in which case inlet and outlet valves 23, 24 are provided in the casing 20, 21 to prevent an alternating partial vacuum and excess pressure as the platen reciprocates. Feeding mechanism comprising endless chains, one shown at 26, carrying gripping devices 25 for the work material and moved by wheels on a shaft 27 may be worked from the crank-shaft 14 by providing thereon a flange 36 carrying a crank-pin 37 and formed with a peripheral cam slot 28 The crankpin through a rod 29 reciprocates a toothed sector 30 engaging a pinion 31 loose on the shaft 27 and this pinion is periodically coupled and uncoupled to the shaft 27 to move forward the chains 26 intermittently by a dog-clutch operated through links 32, 33, from the cam groove 28. The working pressure may be adjusted by wedges 35 beneath the lowermost toggle joints operated by screw and wheel mechanism (not shown) from outside the casing. The crank-shaft may be driven as shown by a worm gear from a driving shaft at right angles or from a parallel shaft by gears giving a choice of speeds.
