As shown, a counterweight 56 slidably mounted on an arm'57 Ywhich inturnis pivoted to a support 58 is employed for this purposel The forward end of the arm 57V is connected to the` `moved into the path of said cam.
ram 19 by means of a link 59 and a threaded bolt 64 pivoted to said link at its upper end and detachably connected to a connecting bar 62 extending across the upper portion of the ram.
Suitable means are provided for assisting in elevating the ram. As shown, a compression spring 63 mounted on the upper end of the bolt 64`which extends through a cross member 62 on the ram 19 and through 4a stirrup 66 supportedfrorn the upper portion of the head is employed for this purpose.` By means of this arrangement the ram will be retained in its elevated position when the rdevice is not operating, and may move vertically relative to the weight 56 due to the tension of the spring 63.
The press is provided with the usual punching tool bolster 67 on which are mounted the die members' 68 for the punching tools.V If desired, the shaft 52 on which the gears 43 vand 49 are mounted may be provided with a fly wheel 69 and the shaft on which the eccentric 44 is mounted may be provided with a connecting rod counterbalance 7l, see Fig. 5.
Suitable clutch mechanism is provided vfor the press whereby the same may be disconnected from the motor or connected thereto when desired. In the construction shown, the parts are so arranged that the' clutch cannot be disconnected except 'when the ram 19 is at its upper limit of moveis operated by a treadle 77 through a link 78, a`
bell crank arm 79, a link 81,a lever 82, and an extensible link 83 which is connected to the outer end of the lever 82 and the arm 76.
In order thatthe machine may be controlled from anumber of positions, a plurality of treadles 77 are provided for operating the rod 78. The link 83 is formed in sections and the sections are telescopically connected, the same being provided with a spring 84 for yieldingly resisting the yextension vof the link.
The means'for preventing the disengagement of the clutch except when in a predetermined position,ithat is, when the ram is at its upper limit of travel, comprises' a cam 85 which is adapted to be engaged by a slidable finger 85 when the same is The finger is moved when the treadle 77 is operated. This is accomplished by a link 87 connected at its upper end to'said finger and at its lower end to a crank arm 88 rigidly connected to theshaft 89 on'which the bell crank arm 79 is mounted. A spring 91 having one end connected to the frame of the punch and its other` end connected to the bell crank 79 isadapted to normally hold the bell crank 79' inV its'upper position fordeclutching the mechanism. y

Fig. 8. The quadrant 104 is operated by a pinion 104 on the shaft 120 which extends beneath all the'bar turning members 13 for operating them simultaneously. The shaft is operated by suitable means as' the motor 130 through a worm drive 140, see Fig. 2.
Slidably mounted on this support is a gauge or guide 110 as more clearly shown in Figs. 8

In metalworking mechanism,a punch press comprising a frame, a bed plate, an arm extending upwardly and outwardly from said plate, a head supported by said arm Vabove said plate said arm being supported solely from its base at the rear for forming an yunobstructed open throat for said press, a ram slidably mounted in said head, a set of toggle links at the rear and a set at the front of said ram, a drawbar secured to said links, and means for pulling said bar' rearwardly for straightening said links for lowering said ram and tools carried by said ram.

In metal workingmechanism a punch press, a frame. a bed plate, a head supported by said frame above said bed plate and in 'spaced-relation thereto and forming therewith Van open throat, a ram slidablyVV mounted in the forward end of said head, means engaging said head at a plurality of points along the same for raising and lowering the rain, and means for supporting ya pair of hanged beams betweensaid head and -head for simultaneously punching holes in the web of one beam and the ilang'es of the other.

In metal working mechanism, a beam turning device comprising astand, a quadrant pivoted to said stand, a pinion geared to-saidquadrant, a beam support movable with said quadrant, means Afor raising and lowering said support, and means including said quadrant. and pinion for rotating said support through at least 90 degrees.
v9. In a metal working device, beam turning mechanism comprising a plurality of stands, beam supports movably mounted on said stands, and means for raising and lowering said supports and for turningthe same on said stands.

In metal working mechanism, a spacing table for supporting beams, supporting means alongside said table for supporting beams, and beam turning mechanism for transferring a beam from said table to said supporting means and vice versa,` said mechanism comprising beam supporting means and means for raising, lowering and for turning said supporting means.
1l- In metal working mechanism, spacing and supporting tables for supporting metal beams,
means for moving said beams longitudinally along said tables, and power operated means for rotating said beams and for transferring said beams from one of said tables to the other.
12. In metal working mechanism, a punch,
' spacing and supporting tables for said punch, said tables extending to opposite sides of said punch, means for simultaneously moving beams along saidtables through said punch, means for raising and lowering said supporting table, and means for transferring beams from one table to the other including means for turning said beam.

Inv metal working mechanism, a spacing table for supporti-ng metal members to be operated upon, a carriage on said table for moving said members along said table, a supporting table alongside said'spacing table, an outrigger arm on said carriage, and vertically adjustable means Vcarried by said arm and movable with said carriage for engaging a beam for moving the same along said supporting table.

In a punch press mechanism, a base member, an arm extending upwardly and forwardly from said base member and having a head overhanging said bed plate for forming an open throat, a ram slidably mounted in said head, tog- Ygle members flexing forwardly and engaging a plurality of points along said head from front to rear, eccentric mechanism, a pull rod connected to said members and adapted to be moved rearwardly for straightening said toggle members for flowering said ram, tools carried by said head,
and means for turning and moving beams beneath said tools for punching said beams in each of their positions.
