My invention pertainsto chute devices such as are employed in rolling mills for guiding the metal from one stand of rolls to another.
In rolling mill practice it is common to provide any slack which may exist-in the metal between the two stands of' rolls. The chutes necessarily have, portions which reach into close proximity with the rolls of the respective stands, and an objection to them, as heretofore constructed, has been that these portions stand in the way of the rolls and their associated parts when it is desired to remove the latter' from the stands for the purpose of regrinding': the rolls, changing them or the like. The rolls, and their associated parts, such as the bearing blocks usually termed chocks, have to be removed laterally through windows providedV for the purpose in the frames of the stands. This requires that any parts of the chutes which stand in line 'with the openings ofl the windows must be taken out of the way before the rolls can'be removed. Heretofore these parts of the chutes have been moved out of' the way by disconnecting them and taking them 01T the mill, in the case of the heavier parts, by means of a crane or the like. This has entailed much loss of time.
It is the principal. object of my invention to provide a chute device in which -the above objection willlbe eliminated and in which any parts of the chutes which stand in line with the window openings can be easily and quickly moved out of the way. Other objects of my invention and advantages obtained thereby will appear from the specication and claims to follow.
As van example of -one form in which my invention can be embodied, I have shown a chute device constructed in accordance therewith, and having a looper applied thereto, in the accompanying drawings and described the same in the following specication. However, I wish it understood that my invention can be embodied in other forms, and that changes can be made in the form described and shown, without exceeding the scope thereof as dened in the appended claims.

In the drawings a front stand lc is shown, from which the strip ofl metal being rolled moves to a rear stand c'. The stands carry operating rolls a, a and bearing rolls b, b', and are provided with 65 windows d, d through which the rolls and associated parts can be removed when this is necessary.
The chute device comprises Ysupports 10 rigidly secured in position in any desiredl manner, as by bolting them to the frames of the roll stands. Upon these supports are mounted rails 11, one on each side of the device, ,which carry a front slide 12 and a rear slide 13. The slides support the chutes and are provided with means whereby they can be moved on the rails towards and vfrom each other, the chutes being constructed so that they can telescope one on the other when the slidesv are thus moved. In this way any chute portions which may lie in line with the openings of the windows d, d can readily be moved out of the-way, affording room for the removal of the rolls.
The front slide is in the form of a casting having at its front end a plurality of brackets 14 35 which support strippers 15 which yieldingly bear upon the lower of the operating rolls a of the front stand. The strippers 15 are loosely mounted in-the slots of the brackets 14 and the strippers are thereby permitted to move relative to the brackets so that the vertical positions of the outer ends of the strippers may vary in accord- .Y ance with the horizontal position of the slide 12 relative to the rolls a. The slide also supports strippers 16 which yieldingly bear upon the upper 95 roll. These parts are generally of a familiar construction, but are so made that they can be moved with the front slide toward and away from the rolls. `Pivoted upon pins 17 carried by the frontslide is va pair of front chutes 18 provided 100 with side ilanges- 19. The chutes are formed with channels 20 in which can lie a looper roll 21, gaps 22 being provided in the side flanges 19 to permit of raising and loweringthe looper roll.
The looper roll is mounted inran arm 23 which 105 is pivoted at 24 tothe front slide and has connected thereto the upper end of a rod 25. The lower end of the rod is pivoted to a lever 26 operated upon by the rod 27 of a piston in the cylinder 28. The piston in the cylinder 28 is operated in 11@ the usual manner so as to cause the looper roll to bear against the under side of the metal strip, taking `up any slack Vthereof and putting the strip under the desired degree of tension.
The front slidehas fixed thereto, at its front end, a central support plate 29, and, beyond'said Asupport plate, has pivoted thereto a central support bar 30 which forms a continuation of the support plate. The support bar is formed with a channel 31, like the channels of the front chutes,
for receiving the looper roll 21. f
The rear slide 13 is constituted by a casting which includes a pair of transverse rails 32 upon which are slidably mounted support castings 33. To these castingsare secured the rear chutes-34 which. are provided with flanges 35 adapted to guide the stripof metal into the rolls a of the rear stand. Such flanges are flared outwardly at theirfront ends, as indicated at 35a.
Rotatably mounted in the rear slide, and disposed beneath the rails.32, are a pair of shafts 36 and 37, of which the latter is driven fromthe former by means of `a chain 38 passing over sprockets on the shafts. The shaft 36 is driven from a motor 39 through a pair of universal joints. 40 and 41. The support castings 33 have downwardly extendingportions 42 which embrace the rails 32 and have secured thereto, beneath said rails, caps 43. Nuts 44 are mounted in thesey caps and are threaded upon the shafts 36 and 37, the threads on the shafts being right and left-handed at their respective ends. From this construction it will be noted that when the motor 39 is energized to rotate the shaft 36 the support castings 33 and 34, with the rear chutes whichy they carry, will be moved either towards or away from each other according to the direction of rotation of the motor. chutes are adjusted s o as to guide into the rolls a of the rear stand strips of varying Widths.
At their front portions, the rear chutes 34 are bent downwardly, as indicated at 34a, and upon these downwardly bent portions rest the ends of the front chutes 18, in such a manner that the chutes constitute continuations of one another when the parts are in their normal operative position. The rear slide carries a support plate `45 which is likewise bent downward at its-front end, as indicated at 45a, to receive the end of the support bar 30 of the front slide.
The anges 35 of the rear chutes are formed with channels 46 which slidably receive the ends of spring clips 47 carried'by the front chutes 18, so that when the rearichutes arev adjusted inwardly and outwardly the front chutes will rock about their pivots 17 and follow them in their adjustment. When the rear chutes have been adjusted inwardly, to accommodate a very narrow strip, they andthe front chutes will take a posi-- tion such as is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Rotatably mounted in a housing 48 and extending longitudinally of the apparatus is a shaft 49 which is screw-threaded, in opposite directions, at its ends to enter correspondingly threaded portions 50 and 51 of the front and rearslide respectively. The shaft 49 is driven, through a train of gearing contained in the housing 48, from a shaft 52 actuated by a motor 5,3. Thus when the motor l is energized torotatethe shaft 52 the front and rearv slides will be caused either to approach or recede from eachv other.
The normal operative position of the parts is shown in Fig. 1, and it will beyseen therefrom that the strippers 15 and 16, brackets 14, etc. assor ciated with the front chutes stand in line with the In this. manner the rear opening of the window d of the front stand and would prevent removal of the rolls and their chocks from the stand. Likewise the ends of the rear chutes 34 stand in line with the openings of the windows d', and' would prevent the removal of the rolls from the 'rearstand When, however, it becomes desirable to remove a roll from a stand the motor 53 is operated to cause the front and rear slides to approach each other, the ends of the front \chut es riding up the inclines 34a of the rear chutes and along the flared portions 35a. of the flanges of the latter. Similarly the support bar 30 rides up the incline 45a of the support plate on the rear slide. When the slides are thus moved towards each other the strippers 15 and other parts which stand inline with` the opening of the window d are movedforward and out of line with such opening, and the ends ofthe chutes 34 are moved rearward and'out of line with the opening of the window d', thereby taking away any obstacle to the removal of the rolls. When the rolls have been replaced, all that is necessary is to operate the motor 53 .in the reverse direction bringing the parts. back to their normal operative position. These roperations can be carried out regardless of the position to which the rear chutes 34 may have been adjusted, and without affecting the operation of the looper.`
I claim:
1. A chute device for employment between a delivering and a receiving stand of a rolling mill, comprising a movably mountedsupport normally disposed adjacent said delivering stand, a second movably mounted support normally disposed adjacent said receiving stand, a pair of chutes carried by said first-named support, a pair of chutes 'mounted Aon said second-named support, and adjustable transversely thereof, and means for moving said supports towards and away from each other.
2. The combination with `a rolling mill including a metal delivering roll stand and a metal receiving roll stand, of a chute device disposed between said stands and comprising a movably mounted support normally disposed adjacent said delivering stand, strippers carried by said support and movable therewith, a second movably mounted support normally disposed adjacent said receiving stand, a chute carried by said firstnamed support and disposed in continuation of said first-named chute, a chute carried by said i second-named support, and means for moving said supports .towards and away from each other,
' whereby said strippers may be moved from operaly 'of said second-'named support, a pair of chutes pivoted to. said first-named support, said lsecondnamed chutes being Vconnected with saidl firstnamed chutes so as to be rocked about their pivots when said first-named chutes are adjusted, and means for moving said supports towards and away from each other.
4. A chutel device for employment between .a delivering and a receiving'stand of a rolling mill,
comprising a movable support normally disposed adjacent said receiving stand, a pair of chutes carried by said support, means for adjusting said chutes transversely of said support, a second movable support normally disposed adjacent said delivering stand, a pair of chutes movably mounted on said second-named support and slidably connected wlthsaid rst-named pair of chutes so as to participate in the adjusting movement of the latter, and means for moving said supports towards and away from each other.
5. A chute device for employment between a delivering and a receiving stand of a rolling mill, comprising a movable support normally disposed adjacent said receiving stand, a pair of chutes carried by said support, means for adjusting said chutes transversely of said support, a movable support normally disposed adjacent said delivering stand, a pair of chutes each pivoted at one end to said second-named -support and slidably connected at the other end with one of said firstnamed chutes, and means for moving said supports towards and away from each other.
6. A chute device for employment between a delivering and a receiving stand of a rolling mill, comprising a track disposed between said stands, a support slidably mounted on said track and normally disposed adjacent said receiving stand, a
pair of chutes carried by said support and having portions for guiding the metal into said receiving stand, a support slidably mounted on said track and normally disposed adjacent said delivering stand, a pair of chutes pivoted to said secondnamed support at the ends thereof adjacent said' delivering stand and slidably connected with said rst-named chutes at their other ends, whereby said second-named chutes participate in the adjusting movement of said first-named chutes, and means for moving said supports towards and away from each other.

A chute device for employment between a y delivering and a receiving stand of a rolling mill, comprising a movable support normally disposed adjacent said receiving stand, a pair of chutes mounted on said support and adjustable transversely thereof, each of said chutes having a downwardly inclined portion at the end thereof remote from said receiving stand, a movable support normally disposed adjacent said delivering stand, a pair of chutes pivoted to said secondnamed support at the ends thereof adjacent said delivering stand and resting at their other ends upon the downwardly inclined portions of said first-named chutes, and means for moving said supports towards and away from each other.
9. The combination with a rolling mill including a metal delivering roll stand and a metal receiving roll stand, of a chute device disposed between said stands and comprising a longitudinally movable chute for receiving the metal from said delivering stand, a second longitudinally movable chute for directing the metal to said receiving stand, said second-named chute being disposed in continuation of said rst-nained chute, and means for moving said chutes towards and away from each other to thereby respectively retract them from, and advance them toward, the adjacent roll stands.
10. The combination with a rolling mill including a metal delivering roll stand and a metal receiving roll stand,'of a chute device disposed between said stands and comprising a movably mounted support normally disposed adjacent said delivering stand, a second movably mounted support normally disposed adjacent said receiving stand, a longitudinally movable chute carried by said rst-named support, a longitudinally movable chute carried by said second-named support and disposed in continuation of said rst-named chute and means for moving said supports horizontally towards and away from each other to thereby respectively retract the chutes from, and advance them toward, the cooperating roll stands.
