Abstract

777,951. Motor cycle driving gear; back pedalling brakes. FICHTEL & SACHS AKT.- GES. March 17, 1954 [March 17, 1953], No. 7732/54. Classes 79(2), 79(3), 79(5) and 136(2). [Also in Group XXVII] In a pedal bicycle having an engine-driven rear wheel 10 the engine crankshaft 1 is chain connected to a shaft 3 rotatably coupled to a shaft 4, and the shaft 4 is also rotatably coupled to a gear rotatably mounted on the pedal spindle 6 and connectable thereto through a clutch rendered operative by rotation of the spindle 6, whereby rotation of the pedals can start the engine, the shaft 4 being connected to the rear wheel by a chain 11. As shown, the shaft 3 is connected by alternatively clutchable gear pairs to the shaft 4. The gear is connected by a chain 5 to the shaft 4, and the clutch comprises a thread on the spindle 6 mounting a sleeve 7 so that forward rotation of the spindle by the pedals causes the sleeve 7 to move from the idling position shown to engage with the gear, thus transmitting pedal drive to the shaft 4 for either starting the engine or assisting the engine drive of the cycle. Rotation of the pedals in the opposite direction causes the sleeve 7 to be clutched to a bush 8 carrying an arm 9 operatively connected to an arm 13 of a rear wheel brake enclosed in a housing 12 to apply the brake. In a modification. Fig. 2 (not shown), the chain drive 5 is replaced by a pinion on the shaft 4 engaging with an internally toothed gear rotatably mounted on the pedal shaft.
