Abstract
470,548. Cycle driving-transmissions and brakes. PRYM GES., W. Dec. 12, 1936, No. 34195. Convention date, Nov. 13. [Classes 136 (i) and 136 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXX] A manual or pedal-operated gear for driving a bicycle wheel k comprises a friction wheel i' rigidly mounted on a shaft g, to which is secured a pinion h engaging a pinion e fast on the crank shaft b. The shaft g is mounted in a housing f freely pivoted about the shaft b, so that rotation of this shaft in the direction of the arrow n causes the wheel i<1> to be forced by the tooth-pressure of the engaging gears e, h into engagement with the driven wheel k On ceasing to pedal, or pedalling slightly backwards the wheel i<1> is disengaged. Engagement is limited by a stop-pin s, and movement in the disengaging direction by a pin .s<1>. The housing f may be connected by a pin u and slot to a rod t for operating a backpedalling brake v of the contracting band type, the crank shaft b being connected to the housing f by a free wheel. The wheel i<1> may be an expanding wheel engaging the tyre or rim and adjustable by linkwork, not shown, to produce an infinitely-variable drive.
