Abstract

625,882. Cycle driving mechanism. ALLEN-BOWDEN, Ltd., and BOWDEN, B. G. June 6, 1947, No. 15053. [Class 136 (ii)] A shaft drive for a pedaloperated cycle comprises a shaft 36 journalled near its ends in frame members and carrying at its ends bevel gears 41 and 39 in driving engagement with bevel gears 50, 34 one of which is fast with the crank spindle 14 and the other of which is connected with the rear wheel hub 29 through a free wheel clutch 30. The cycle shown is of the kind described in Specification 625,835 and has a shaft drive enclosed within a hollow frame member arranged according to Specification 625,836. The rear wheel hub 29 is journalled at one end upon a stationary spindle 26 and at its other end upon a hub member 31 to which it is connected by the free-wheel clutch 30. A bolt 27 holds the spindle 26 in position. On withdrawal of the bolt the stationary spindle can be withdrawn completely with the hub member 31 and wheel hub 29. The shaft 36 in plan view is inclined to the central plane of the cycle, its rear end being further from the central plane than the other.
