Abstract

593,941. Ratchet clutches. BALLAMY. L. M., and SHEEPSHANKS, R. H. June 20, 1945, No. 15748. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] A free wheel device suitable for incorporation in the rear wheel of a motor-cycle comprises a driven gear 22 concentric with the rear wheel having a cylindrical recess in which is an arcuate member 35, e.g. of cast iron, frictionally engaging the inner wall 41 and anchored at one end only by a knuckle joint 33 to a triangular member 30 fast with the rear wheel, the other two arms 37, 38 of the triangular member serving to guide the arcuate member 35. The whole mechanism runs in oil. When the gear 22 is driven, the member 35 tends to expand and grips the wall 41 and so transmits the drive to triangular member 30. On the over-run, member 30 pulls member 35 away from the wall 41 and no drive is transmitted. Specification 562,169, [Group XXXI], is referred to.
