Abstract
623,639. Bicycles and tricycles. PODBIELSKI, L. March 11, 1946, Nos. 7512 and 24642. [Class 136 (ii)] In a cycle, driving means comprises a stationary rear axle 25 fixed to the frame of the cycle, two treadles 15, 15<SP>1</SP> adapted to reciprocate with their hubs 2, 2' on the outer ends of the axle, bevel gears 30 on the inner ends of the hubs of the treadles, a cross pin 32 on the axle, a reversing bevel gear 31, on the cross pins engaging the bevel gears 30 and free wheel coupling alternately connecting the treadles, the reversing gear and the free wheel couplings being enclosed in a housing 5 driven by the treadles and carrying on its circumference a toothed wheel 22 from which the rotation of the rear wheel is derived by means of a train of gears, a toothed wheel 17 of this train being fixed to the rear wheel. The rear wheel 16 of the cycle is mounted between the prongs 19<SP>1</SP>, 19<SP>11</SP> of the rear fork 19. Hub 2 of one treadle is journalled in the eye of the hub 18 of the rear wheel which has fixed at the opposite end the pinion 17. Extensions of the hub 18 and of the pinion 17 are rotatably journalled in eyes of the prongs 19<SP>1</SP>, 1911. Journalled in the prong 19<SP>11</SP> are gears 20, 21, the gear 20 meshes with the pinion 17 and the gear 21 engages the gear 22 on the housing 5. In one modification prongs 19<SP>1</SP>, 19<SP>11</SP> are directly connected with the axle 25. In another modification the axle is fitted in lateral brackets connected to the frame and in a further modification the housing enclosing the bevel gears is provided with two circumferential toothed wheels and on a counter axle or shaft parallel to the axle of the rear wheel of the cycle are provided two corresponding toothed wheels each of which can at wili be brought into operative connection with a wheel on the housing by a double coned clutch or eccentric so as to obtain two different ratios of transmission.
