Abstract
168,438. Ball, J. T. June 11, 1920. Balance or differential gearing. - The rear wheel of a motor-cycle and the wheel of a side-car are driven through differential gear situated in the cycle-wheel hub. The rearwheel spindle a is driven by a belt pulley b and has arms c carrying planet pinions f, g, which gear respectively with internal teeth h on the wheel hub and with a gear wheel n fixed to a sleeve o. This sleeve drives the side-car wheel spindle u through a disconnectible joint x and a universal joint w. When the motorcycle alone is to be used the differential gear is locked by means of a screw threaded into the hub of the cycle wheel and engaging with a slot in the wheel spindle a or the sleeve o.
