Class 79(ii) In a motor-assisted cycle the crank axle has an extension at the end opposite the chain wheel on which is freely mounted a pulley which is driven by a V-belt from the engine, and also a chain sprocket which drives the rear wheel through a chain, means being provided for locking together the pulley and sprocket, when they are at rest, by direct manual manipulation. As shown in Fig. 1, the crank spindle 2 is mounted in ball bearings and has a projection on which is freely mounted a V-belt pulley 8 by means of needle bearings 11 Freely mounted on the hub of the pulley 8 by means of a plain bearing 12 is a chain sprocket 15. The pulley and chain sprocket can be locked together by pressing in the studs 19, which engage in teeth 16 of a toothed member integral with the chain sprocket. The three studs are held in position by a spring ring 22, see also Fig. 3, which engages one of two grooves in each of studs 19.
