Abstract

654,818. Dynamo driving arrangements. MILLER, F. J., and MILLER, N. V. Dec. 13, 1948, No. 32126. [Class 35] A cycle lighting dynamo is supported outside the wheel hub by the wheel spindle and is driven at a speed greater than that of the wheel through gearing in the wheel - hub. The casing 10 of the imbricated pole generator is integral with a discshaped carrier 1 secured on the spindle 3 by a nut 3a. A cup-shaped housing 5 carrying the spokeflange 7 carries a spring- pressed plunger 16 controlled by a cam-lever 20 so that it can be made to engage a resilient driving block 15 on a toothed driving-wheel 13 rotating freely on the spindle and meshing with a pinion 12 on the dynamo spindle. The driving gear may be of fibre and the driving block has a chamfered engaging surface to reduce chatter between the gear teeth owing to the uneven torque of the generator at low speeds. The plunger casing 17 is fixed on a resilient cushion 18 to reduce noise. In a modification the driving block 15 may be replaced by a ring secured to the wheel 13 and having a series of projections for engagement by the pin 16, and, if desired, belted instead of toothed gearing may be used.
